A Night of Myths and Legends: Transformation through Oral Traditions

Theme: Family dynamics. We'll learn from mythic stories and storytelling exercises about how we can be more empathetic and connected

This event’s theme will be about cleaning up our family relationship dynamics. Do you get ridiculously hooked by mom/dad/siblings/in-laws? Do you want to access more love with them? Come learn what wisdom our ancestors’ stories have for you.

I will share an ancient myth that has wisdom for us about family and how we can take our place alongside them without giving up who we are. Together, we will explore that myth for wisdom.

Then we will go through feelings-based storytelling exercises to self inquire and confront the ways that we block love, intimacy, connection, and general healthy relating from happening.

In a world of ever increasing noise and stimulation, the tradition of oral storytelling demands stillness, presence, attention, and courage. Stillness, presence, and attention to hear what the story has to say, and courage to follow through on what you've heard.

Before listening to a story, our ancestors would first identify a threshold they were waiting to cross. What kind of transformation or initiation were they seeking in their lives?

Then, crowded around a campfire, they would listen to a story that had endured through generations and generations. The stories that survived were the ones that contained deep insights about inner human archetypes, knowledge of how to act when things are falling apart, and bold possibilities of how one can be. Through stories, they found wisdom, transformation, healing, and inspiration.

"If you listen carefully, at the end you'll be someone else." — The Mahābhārata

Daway first heard a transformational mythic story told in the woods of Vermont while on a vision quest. Sitting around a campfire before setting out for four solo days without food, the different stories that were told inspired him, grounded him, and twisted his stomach in knots as he confronted how he, as much as he didn’t want to admit it, was like some of their characters. He has since shared the power of storytelling at communities like Findhorn and Tamera in Europe and all over the West Coast. He delights in the unexpected lessons people draw from them and how each story lives a new life depending on the listener.
