Let's take a tour through the different characters of rope handling! You'll meet the magician, the drama queen, the painter, and our enemy the squirrel - and many more. This class is a sometimes silly, but always practical, rope handling course for beginner-intermediate rope students.
We will cover tension management, strategies for tying frictions quickly and smoothly, and moving rope and moving your partner to create stable structures and communicate intention. Practice drills are key to successful rope handling, this is a very hands on class!
This is a mixed level class suitable for beginners who have had some experience with rope, but is also useful for anyone who wants to be smoother and more confident when tying. This is a partnered tying class, many of the exercises can be self tied but it may be more difficult. Switching is welcome and encouraged. We recommend bringing at least three 30 foot ropes.
Instructor bio:
Bio: Sluttyhands (he/him) and Dancehalldyke (she/her) are San Francisco Bay based rope artists. Sluttyhands has been tying for eleven years, Dancehalldyke for eight. They both primarily tie in fairly traditional Japanese styles while working in dynamic transitions and emotional tension. Their tying together typically focuses on going to dark and vulnerable places and playing with strong emotions, ranging from violent and rough, to creepy and distant, and occasionally even to sincere and loving. They want to offer you new ways of exploring each other with rope, to show you concrete tools beyond patterns that allow you to relate and communicate with each other effectively. To their rope classes, Dancehalldyke brings her past as a classical ballet person and 15 years of experience teaching collegiate math and physics, and is a student of Barkas. Sluttyhands brings in a martial arts background, a past as a math and computer science professor, and a love of fast-paced, restrictive, and challenging shapes and sequences. Their shibari style is full of emotion and power dynamics, so you’ll gain tools to create connection and energy in your scenes - regardless of your technical level.
