This hands-on class focuses on a specific, crucial element of any suspension: how to tie off the suspension lines. The class will teach several different options for how to tie off suspension lines and discuss the pros and cons of each option, and when/where/why/with whom someone might select a particular suspension line tie-off as more appropriate than another. Weighing and balancing the relative risks of security/solidity vs. quick-release in a given specific context will be a key emphasis. The class will teach not just different knots, but also location/positioning, and tying techniques. We will briefly address the concept of line management and keeping suspension lines organized. The material taught in this class will include some standard tie-offs used frequently in partner suspensions, as well as some less common tie-offs, including some "quickest-release" tie-offs that Parker RopeBoi uses primarily in self-suspensions, which has a different risk profile than partner suspensions.
The class will address specific use cases of lock-offs from both self-suspension and partner suspension.
Please note: People tying in the class do not need a person to tie. Participants can do the hands-on practice with an inanimate object such as a chair or backpack.
Self-tyers are also very welcome in the class.
Skills/Experience Required: This class is intended for people who have some prior suspension experience and who have learned at least one way to lock off a suspension upline. If you have never suspended before, the class might be too advanced for you to follow along fully, but you are welcome to attend and observe. At a mininmum, anyone tying must already know:
What to bring: At least 2 pieces of rope suitable for suspension uplines. If you have suspension gear such as carabiners, ring, etc., please bring it--we will have some carabiners/rings to loan for the workshop for people who do not bring their own.
