An Incomplete History of Rope Bondage with Ojipan [Virtual Class]

What is shibari, and how did we get here?

This virtual class is a wide-ranging introduction to the history and context of rope bondage, from its origins in Japan to its evolution across five continents. Together, we’ll explore some of the sticky, structural, and sociopolitical questions that shape the rope we practice today.

We’ll dig into:

  1. What is shibari?
  2. How did it make its way to the U.S.?
  3. Why are most of the "Big Name" teachers men?
  4. Why don’t I see people like me in historical depictions of rope?

📚 You Should Know:

No prior experience with rope or historical study required. This is a conversation about context, history, and tradition - curiosity is the only prerequisite.
