Read the Room: Body Language at Parties

Hosted by Mae (Phoenix Events NYC) & Nix

Keeping with Eventbrite guidelines, this event is not sex-based, hookup style, explicit, fetlsh or p0rnographic. This an educational workshop and experience with both theory and practical elements as explained in details below.

Words can be tricky - but bodies speak the truth. At parties and pIay spaces, connection often starts long before the first conversation. It's in the glance across the room, the angle of your body, the quiet invitation—or the clear, firm no—that shapes every interaction.

In this workshop, we'll dive into the art of reading and sending signals without saying a word. You'll learn to pick up on social cues, flirtation signals, approachability, and signs from the nervous system—skills that are crucial for navigating social interaction at events with confidence and grace.

Through hands-on activities and guided discussions, you'll sharpen your senses, learn how to approach others non-awkwardly, and get better at sensing when to lean in... and when to back off. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the scene, mastering body language will transform how you connect with others—and how others are drawn to you.

💡 What We'll Explore:

🤟 ASL for Party Situations – Learn helpful signs, how to spell your name, and phrases used in communities like ours.

👀 Spotting Signals – How to recognize openness, hesitation, interest, or discomfort without a single word being spoken.

💃 Projecting Playful Energy – How your posture, eye contact, and body language create invitations (or barriers) at social events.

The Subtle No – How to notice early boundary signals before a verbal 'no' is ever needed—and respect them skillfully.

🎯 Approach Like a Pro – Techniques for making non-creepy, confident approaches at parties, including timing, vibe-matching, and exit strategies.

🔄 Reciprocity in Action – How to notice if energy is being returned and how to escalate (or gracefully withdraw) based on nonverbal feedback.

🧠 Nervous System Literacy – Understanding the "vocabulary" of nervous system states: how to read signs of openness, freeze, flight, or shutdown in others—and recognize your own. Learn when it's appropriate to help ground and co-regulate, and when it’s better to disengage.

🎭 Mini Roleplays and Group Activities – Practice reading and responding to subtle cues in a playful, low-pressure setting.

Workshop Format:

Discussion & Practical Exercises: Through a mix of group and partner discussions, you’ll interact with others, practice communication techniques, and gain feedback to build confidence.

Solo & Group Work:

  1. Attend solo or bring a partner. Couples can stay paired or explore practicing with others.
  2. You’ll have opportunities to practice with both familiar partners and new acquaintances to simulate established dynamics and/or pickup scene scenarios.
  3. Expect communication-based exercises in partners and/or small groups. You can also opt out at any time and observe others.

Dress Code: Feel free to dress however you want. There is a space to change if needed.

After-Hours:

After the workshop we will have social time to practice what you have learned in a low pressure and relaxed environment. Engage at your own comfort level—whether that means observing, casually chatting by the snacks, or connecting with others from the Workshop. Non sex-based.
