Born to Drum is one long weekend of summer camp for women and gender non-conforming folks of all ages. Babies, kids, teens, adults, and elders all gather together, to experience the beauty of northern California, the healing of music we make ourselves, and the magic of a weekend away from men and from screens. (Boy children up to 10 yrs old are welcome. All minors must accompanied by an adult.)
Born to Drum camp is welcoming to all women, and to GNC LGBTQ folks using she or they pronouns. You can expect that roughly 60% (or more) of the adults will be LGBTQ identified.
This year we are gathering at Bort Meadow camp grounds in Oakland. This location means your ticket is far less expensive (than last year) and that you are responsible for your own meals, giving you the traditional camping experience of cooking/eating under the sky, without electricity, and freedom to control your own food.
You have the option to buy an Overnight Ticket and camp in your tent on the land with us. Or you are welcome to buy a Day Camper Ticket which means you will carpool or Lyft back and forth, and arrange your own local lodging. Bort Meadow is a 15-20 min drive from most parts of Oakland, including many lovely neighborhoods in the hills and near Mills College, traditional chain hotels in Emeryville, and more.
During the day there are lots of classes from the best teachers with decades of experience. Drumming is the centerpiece of our programming but there is much more to choose from, including dance, yoga, elder wisdom, music, and more.
If you want to learn to drumming from the best women teachers, we have everything from raw beginners' intros to advanced techniques and jam sessions. We also have hiking trails and places for you to hang your hammock and do nothing!
In the evenings we gather for concerts, sing alongs, interactive fun, and of course campfires 🔥
Ticket link will be posted here when available.
Camping Info:
The campground has very nice indoor compost toilets but no showers or electricity, and most people do not have any Internet or phone signal.
There is a water spigot near the picnic tables and campfire, and we set up a wash station for all dishes. Overnight campers are welcome to bring small camp stoves to set up in the designated area for the weekend, and coolers of course. We do an ice run on the 2nd or 3rd day of camp depending on the weather.
