Cartoons & Conversation Club

Remember the “hope it never ends” feeling of watching Saturday morning cartoons in your jammies? Knowing you had a whole ‘nother day between you and school, homework, or stress? For those few golden hours, just the cozy embrace of a sleepy household in slow-motion and the sugary “crunch” of slightly-soggy cereal for breakfast...

Welcome to Cartoons & Conversation Club, where we’re bringing one of the BEST parts of childhood back!

Every month, The Sanctuary of East Harlem transforms into a comfy, cuddly “living room” environment with mats on the floor for all the blankets, pillows, and stuffies you can possibly bring! Snuggle up with a snack from our community-contributed cereal bar while we watch up to 90 minutes of animated content on our big projector screen. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy some lightly-facilitated conversation before saying “goodbye” to the club until next month.

This month’s selection: "Modern Cartoons" (thoughtful selections from current children's programming, 2010-now)

How is this different from a regular watch party?

  1. You’re encouraged to show up “in character” ~ that means bring jammies, blankies, stuffies, etc.
  2. Cereal bar! We provide milk and up to two non-milks, YOU provide the cereals! (Other favorite/creative breakfast-themed treats are also most welcome!)
  3. Kinky, conscious, comfy, cozy community...’nuff said.
  4. We’ll be injecting some extra “warm fuzzies” into the event with lightly-facilitated, interest-driven conversation about the movie/cartoons.

What will we watch?

  1. A feature-length movie or a few episodes of current or retro kids’ TV programming. Monthly selections will be announced in individual event postings.
  2. We will do occasional polls to inform future selections, and would also LOVE to receive your suggestions! However, please keep in mind:
  3. We are prioritizing content that invokes the “warm fuzzy” vibes and fosters a sense of belonging, togetherness, and shared understanding. With so much coldness, hardness, and division in the world, couldn’t we all stand to come together in connected, loving kindness?

  2. "I'm not a member, can I still attend?" Yes! While all of our programming is designed for our members and their chosen guests, we do offer special community driven events with no cap on the number of non-member tickets available for purchase. However, members and their chosen guests will be able to buy tickets at a discounted rate.
  3. "Is this an accessible space?" Unfortunately, The Sanctuary of East Harlem is not wheelchair accessible, attendees must be able to walk-up a flight of twenty steps. Other event/venue accessibility questions, please reach out directly.

About the Facilitator (IG/Fet/Venmo: @CreatrixOfChaos)

Kyla is a Devotional Deviant dealing in hearts, holes, poles and souls. Primarily serving as an Initiatrix – one entrusted with facilitating vulnerable firsts – she is adept at navigating your darkest, sharpest edges because she’s spent her life examining and learning to enjoy her own. A former language and socio-emotional skills teacher, she now focuses on re-engaging, re-educating, and revealing your inner child through adult play. Her own work surrounding an early sense of un-belonging inspires her to offer spaces for intentional explorers to practice the art & science of connection, communication, and coming closer together. When it comes to surfing the waves of life’s inherent chaos, she is a true believer in harnessing the power of the “Polarity at Play” (and fervently preaches this gospel to anyone who will listen ~ please ask!).
