Step Back in Time to the Glittering Era of Disco!
Get ready to party like it’s Studio 54 at our disco-themed party on Friday, March 14, from 7-10pm, presented by the San Francisco Transgender District! This unforgettable night will feature a Best Dress disco costume contest, and a celebration of the legendary Sylvester, the Queen of Disco.
In honor of Sylvester’s iconic legacy, we’ll showcase special archival material graciously provided by the GLBT Historical Society, offering a rare glimpse into the life and artistry of this trailblazing performer. Relive the magic of March 11, 1979, when Mayor Dianne Feinstein declared “Sylvester Day”in San Francisco, commemorating his groundbreaking performance at the War Memorial Opera House—a night that elevated disco to the city’s most hallowed halls of art and culture.
Sylvester, a Black, genderqueer visionary, defied norms and paved his own path with unapologetic joy and confidence. His timeless hit, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real),” remains a disco anthem, and his legacy lives on through their music and their commitment to supporting AIDS organizations like Project Open Hand and the AIDS Emergency Fund.
Don’t miss your chance to celebrate the Queen of San Francisco and the vibrant queer underground music scene that shaped the Tenderloin and SOMA neighborhoods. Register now and join us for a night of glitter, glam, and disco magic!
Let’s dance, celebrate, and honor the legacy of Sylvester—the one and only Queen of Disco!
