SydeBoob Duo and ChamberQUEER present Operator, a radically expansive rethinking of the chamber duet for the modern audience. Operator - staging January 10 and January 11 at MITU580 Theater in Gowanus - is an evening-length showcase of sex-positive New Music, explicit art, and exciting stunts sure to please the eye, enrapture the ear, and tickle the libido.
The brainchild of the Brooklyn experimental music duo Anna Elder and Sarah Steranka, who perform as SydeBoob Duo, Operator celebrates queer liberation, pleasure and self actualization as seen through the lens of consensual adult sex work. "Not all performers are sex workers," says Elder, "but all sex workers are performers. It probably shouldn't be a surprise that most of the sex workers I've known support their creative practice with their second job. In fact, many of the performers in Operator have engaged in or are currently engaging in sex work, including myself. By blending our creative practices into the potent cocktail of Operator we hope to normalize consensual sex work as the common labor it is and destigmatize its practice as an economic support in the fine arts."
Operator opens with an hour-long mixer, spiced with an interactive exhibit of audio erotica by writers from Deviance Magazine (including Lux Pyre, Vincent Lechery and Helen Juliet), oral interviews from Decriminalize Sex Work, Deviance Magazine, Bluestockings Cooperative, Helen Juliet, and 7 Days ofDomination; and a pop-up market of kink vendors. The evening continues with a performance from the vocalist-aerialist Heather Michele Meyer and boundary-pushing circus from the members of Coney Island's own Hot Fix Sideshow, including Maggie McMuffin, Alaska, Kita St Cyr, Obsidian Absurd and Queensiñera. Members of the experimental chamber ensemble Infrasound, will also round out the evening with a queer focused set of new music. Having properly lathered up the crowd, Elder and Steranka will perform a selection of new music by an array of accomplished queer composers, including Michael Genese, Anna Elder, Nathan Hall, Liz Gre, Curtis Rumrill, and Anthony R. Green.
MITU580 is located at 580 Sackett Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Doors for each night of this show open at 6:30 PM, aerial and circus performances start at 7:30pm and Anna Elder and Sarah Steranka will play from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. This event is suggested for mature audiences 18 and up and offers a $25 base ticket, a $10 ticket for college students and a no-charge ticket for anyone engaged in the sex industry. Advance tickets are available now on Eventbrite for both the January 10 and January 11 dates. The event will donate a portion of all ticket sales to local sex worker organizations who provide services to NYC sex workers including present, G.L.I.T.S. and Red Canary Song. This evening is generously funded by The Brooklyn Arts Council and is co-presented by ChamberQueer.
