Humanist Holiday - Understanding Day!

Our holiday events will be split between two locations: Balboa Park and 1841 Cabernet Dr, Chula Vista, CA 91913. Make sure to read the detailed description below for times and locations!

Every year, near the May cross-quarter day, Aretéans gather in their communities to celebrate the Second Tenet of Aretéanism, “Seek Greater Understanding”. It’s a day that venerates science, learning, curiosity, and elevating our level of consciousness. Come join us for great company, great messages, great food, and a great time!

We'll be partying all day! Feel free to get your Understanding Day holiday started early with us, or just show up for dinner and convocation!

1. 1200h - Lunch at "Panama 66" in Balboa Park
2. 1300h - Museum of Us in Balboa Park
3. 1350h - California Tower tour at the Museum of Us
4. 1630h - Cocktail hour in Chula Vista
5. 1700h - Potluck feast in Chula Vista
6. 1900h - Holiday convocation in Chula Vista
7. 2000h - Party On!

Museum of Us and California Tower

Tickets are $20 for the museum + $10 for the tower tour. If you have an explorer pass you'll get the museum for free, or if you have a library card you can go to your library and get a museum ticket for free! You'll still need $10 for the tower tour though. If you're planning on joining us for the tower, you need to be at the museum well in advance to buy your ticket, fill out your forms, and be waiting at the gather point by 1350h!

Potluck and Convocation

Convocation is the main event of the day! We'll sing some motivational music and listen to some inspiring messages, swear ourselves in as scientists for the coming year with The Scientific Oath, and then feel "The Power of Science"... our annual ritual challenging us to do an experiment on our lives! If you only attend one thing this day, make it this one!

Other Understanding Day Details

We traditionally get dressed to the nines in formalwear on Understanding Day! This is distinct from "semi-formal" (which we wear on Reason Day). Tuxes, ballgowns, and military dress uniforms are encouraged for all of our events on this holiday! That said, don't be shy if you don't have anything super fancy, come in a way that helps you feel confident, and shows off your love of learning everything that there is to know in life!

It's also traditional for us on Understanding Day to salute the scientists and engineers that have made life better. Think ahead about who your favorite scientist or engineer is, and why, so that you can nominate them to be saluted by us!

Finally, Understanding Day is a time for applying the Scientific Method to our own lives... Spend some time in advance of this holiday imagining what kind of experiments you could do on how you live, so that you'll be prepared to commit yourself to that exploration with us!
