In Loving Memory of Joe Kukura

Joe Kukura was a longtime member of Mission Control and part of the fabric of the original building. Someone whose presence helped shape this space in ways both quiet and unforgettable.

Polly Superstar shared this memory of Joe, capturing a piece of his wild, beautiful energy:

“We have so much complicated and beautiful history that it's hard to pinpoint a single story, but one that sticks in my memory is the year the San Francisco Giants won the World Series with a sweep.
Joe was living at Mission Control, and as is the way in San Francisco when sports teams win, the Mission had a riot. I hid from the flames and the sirens, tucked in the back of the building, hoping it wouldn’t burn down in the night.
Joe went out wearing a bandleader outfit and carrying a broom.
I was worried about him, but he came home in the early hours gleeful and rosy-cheeked.
The next morning there was a HUGE photo of him in the newspaper, looking like an absolute madman in front of a bonfire in the middle of Mission Street, brandishing his broom at the camera. The perfect face to represent a riot.
Oh, Joe. I miss you already.”

Joe embodied a kind of fearless joy, absurdity, and presence that lives on in the culture of Mission Control and in the people who knew and loved him.

To honor his memory, PINK is going full sequins this Friday.

Joe was known for his iconic sequins jacket—bold, sparkly, impossible to ignore—just like him. We invite you to wear your sequins, your shimmer, your shine, and bring a little extra sparkle to the night in his honor.

Let’s light up the room the way Joe always did.
