Leather culture has always been about more than kink. It is a living history of resilience, advocacy, and community care. This class explores modern activism from 1955 to the present and shows how the struggles for civil rights, gay rights, and Leather visibility are deeply connected. By looking at the past, we can better understand the responsibility and power we hold today as Leatherfolk and kink community members.
Class Outline:
A short lecture introducing the concept of activism and how it shows up in daily life and in community spaces.
A timeline review of pivotal civil rights milestones and how these movements shaped the broader landscape of social justice.
A look at key events in LGBTQIA+ history and how queer liberation has influenced Leather and BDSM communities.
An overview of Leather and BDSM history from the mid-twentieth century to today, with attention to activism that has fostered growth and survival.
A discussion on the role of advocacy and visibility in sustaining and protecting Leather identity and culture.
Practical guidance and connections for those who want to take action and strengthen their role in the ongoing story of Leather.
This class encourages reflection, conversation, and empowerment, showing how activism continues to shape Leather culture and why our voices are still needed.
