Mononormativity's Impact on Non-Monogamous Relationships w/ PolyMarla (Online)

This class will recorded. The recording will be sent to ticket holders and available for viewing for 30 days.

This class seeks to investigate the paradigm of mononormativity in Western colonial societies, and the ways that people engaged in non-monogamy are required to deconstruct and divest themselves of its pervasive impact on their relationship dynamics.

Participants will be invited to:

  1. Understand the paradigm of mononormativity, and the way it affects expectations of partnership.
  2. Investigate the ways mononormative thinking can impact non-monogamous relationship dynamics.
  3. Approach the deconstruction of the mononormative lens through a framework of compassion and understanding, rather than criticism and judgment (of self and/or others).
  4. Strategize how to override mononormative programming when engaging in non-monogamous relationships.

About the Instructor

Marla (they/them) is a white, Queer, gender-defiant, neuro-fabulous therapist, educator, and author who has been practicing polyamory since 2005. They have been offering nonmonogamy workshops and consultations in academic and professional settings as of 2009. Based in Tkaronto, their therapy practice centers the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ and nonmonogamous identities and relationships.

In 2022, Marla introduced PolyaMarla an accessible, anti-oppressive, intersectional resource on social media. PolyaMarla has since grown into a team effort that offers education, training, and consultation for those who are practicing, or interested in understanding nonmonogamy for personal and professional development. You can find Marla on social media as PolyaMarla, or check out their programming through their website.

Most recently, Marla wrote a book about the impact of social paradigms -like mononormativity- on nonmonogamous relationships (they also had the pleasure of narrating the audiobook). Nonmonogamy and Defying a Paradigm is currently available wherever books are sold. Find them on TikTok and Instagram.
