We invite community members to learn about historic oppression and systemic racism and share their lived experiences for personal and community empowerment.

As Audre Lorde reminds us, “There is no such thing as a single issue because we don’t live single-issue lives.” Our racial identities cannot be separated from our gender, sexuality, class, ability, and all the identities that shape our experiences. Despite progress in LGBTQIA2SMahu+ representation, the fight for inclusive and liberatory curriculum in K-12 Ethnic Studies remains an ongoing struggle. From book bans to discriminatory legislation and disproportionate mental health challenges, we must ensure that queer and trans students are not just acknowledged but central to how we envision justice in education.

In this workshop, we will engage with Brian Batugo, a queer Filipinx-American Ethnic Studies educator and leader who will share insights on the importance of intersectional curriculum, the role of Ethnic Studies in LGBTQIA2SMahu+ liberation, and practical strategies for creating more inclusive and affirming classrooms.
