Radiant Weave for Suspension with UnboundedShibari

VoxBody is pleased to offer this class from Unbounded Shibari, sharing his unique method of binding and suspending the body!

Join us on May 24 for Radiant Weave for Suspension, a three-hour class introducing the woven hip, thigh, and lower leg harnesses that form the foundation of the Radiant Weave system.

Radiant Weave is a method and style for constructing low-bulk, no-stem harnesses designed specifically for suspension. It has the aesthetic of a decorative body tie but functions as a high-performance suspension harness. In many cases, outperforming and wearing longer in dynamic suspension conditions than traditional column-based ties.

Originally developed to support an aerialist performer and refined through repeated suspension testing, Radiant Weave distributes load across body regions rather than compressing force around singular loops. The result is a harness that lends itself to dynamic suspension, long wear, and fluid resets between poses.

This class introduces a core pattern within a larger full-body system. The techniques taught can later be adapted for chest harnesses, arms, and expanded configurations, but in the interest of depth and precision we will focus on:

• The woven hip and thigh harness

• The woven lower leg harness

Students will leave with completed hip/thigh and calf/foot harnesses in the Radiant Weave style, along with a clear understanding of why the system works and how it distributes load effectively for suspension.

CLASS STRUCTURE:

1:45pm: Doors open // 2pm Class start time // 2:15pm: Doors closed and no late entry

• Introduction to the teacher, demo partner, participants, and method.

• Full demonstration of the hip harness (tied twice — once per side and integrated together).

• Guided follow-along tying with experimentation and partner share-outs.

• Demonstration and repetition of the lower leg harness.

• Theory discussion: load distribution and suspension function.

• The final hour is instructor-supported tying time to experiment, suspend, and refinement.

The format is follow-along with space for troubleshooting, revoicing lessons within tying pairs, and instructor feedback. After formal instruction concludes, the instructor will remain available for experimentation and application.

UnboundedShibari's anchor partner and demo bottom will be present throughout the instructional portions for questions.

PREREQUISITES:

* This class is best suited for experienced riggers and bottoms who have previously successfully performed multiple suspensions (at least ~10 suspensions) independently and are comfortable responding to in-air troubleshooting in real time.

• Strong upline and ring management skills

• A suspendable chest harness that can be combined with the hip and leg harnesses taught in class, that both tying partners have previously, and successfully used in suspension.

• Understanding of nerve vs. circulation distinctions and clear communication between pairs around sensation (for bottoms).

  • Participants must be able to communicate clearly during suspension and respond to feedback in real time.

• Full suspension kit and knowledge of how to use it.

This is not a first suspension class. It is designed for those looking to integrate existing suspension skills into a cohesive new system and style.

The instructor reserves the right to stop any suspension that appears unsafe. This is a space to push your skills and to receive feedback in service of safety and refinement.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

• Approximately 6 body ropes (standard length dependent on body size; this does not include uplines).

• Suspension kit including ring, straps, carabiners. (Every attending pair will have their own suspension point for use).

• Cutting tool required for participation.

• Your own rigging equipment and familiarity with its use.

Instructor will tie with hemp. If using jute, ensure it is newer, inspected, and in good condition. Synthetic rope is also acceptable and works well with this method. Synthetic uplines are strongly encouraged for safety and peace of mind.

All sessions are consent-based environments emphasizing respect, inclusion, and skill development.

Every tying pair will have access to their own point. Suspension points available will be a combination of single points and bamboo available on a first come, first serve basis.

Tickets available for tying/suspending pairs and also for solo observers.

If finances are a barrier for your attendance in this class, please email us at voxbody@gmail.com; we have limited scholarship observer spots available!

ACCESSIBILITY:

Vox Body Studio is a wheelchair accessible venue with an accessible restroom.

Mat-covered floors provided. Chairs and cushions available. Modifications offered where possible.

Please email in advance for specific accommodations.

Non-participating assistants required for accessibility needs may attend in addition to the participant’s free of charge.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Dr. Ben (he/him) is the founder of Unbounded Shibari and creator of the Radiant Weave Shibari Method. He has taught privately and in class settings and is the originator and authority on this system.

A self-taught rigger influenced by contemporary Japanese rope aesthetics and suspension engineering, his work blends decorative weaving with functional suspension design. As a disabled rope educator, he centers clarity, precision, and sustainable load distribution in his teaching.

His demo partner and regular anchor tying partner will be present for demonstrations.
