From parks to sidewalks, trees to lampposts, hashira techniques can make the world your playground.
But hashira - suspending from a pole or upright post - adds meaningful complexity and risk to suspension. While we’re used to functioning on the ground and in the air, this form of play offers another “gravity” to anchor (and torment) our partners.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to set a point for a hashira suspension, adapt common harnesses, and navigate the unique considerations of tying to (and around) vertical structures. Expect hands-on exploration of technique, safety, and play potential.
We’ll Cover
– How to set a suspension point on a vertical structure
– Adaptions and harness considerations for tying to (and around) posts and poles
– Tools for clear communication and adaptive problem-solving in the air
This class is part of our Shibari 401 class track, taught on the first Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month.
401 classes are for tying pairs who are already working in full suspension. We won’t be teaching upline mechanics, but we will dig deep into the structure, sensation, and scene-building potential of suspension forms. Expect hands-on time, conceptual depth, and plenty of room to explore.
You Should Know:
– Students tying should be very comfortable tying both uplines and harnesses on the body. Not sure if that’s you? Join us for a Shibari 301 workshop for a refresher.
– Students being tied should have some experience communicating while in rope and processing intense sensations.
– Students should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
– We will not be teaching uplines in this class - please review them in advance.
You Should Bring:
– Your full rope kit - enough rope to tie both an upper- and lower-body harness, plus several uplines - and a cutting tool
– Harnesses you are already familiar with (your own or classic patterns)
– A notebook or something to take notes on
– Curiosity and a collaborative attitude
