The body's largest sex organ is the brain. Sinema Club stimulates yours with films that are explicitly erotic, homo-romantic, or gender-exploring -- and always thought-provoking. A rousing discussion follows; drinking is encouraged throughout, and mingling happens before, in breaks and after. Plus: free popcorn from our vintage cart. You can also order in from the many restaurants around, and make it dinner and a movie.

This month's feature: Velvet Goldmine (1998)

A musical drama written and directed by Todd Haynes, the film is set in glam rock days of British early 1970s, and tells the story of fictional bisexual and androgynous pop star Brian Slade, who faked his own death. Slade is based on David Bowie, while the tale strongly parallels Bowie's relationships with Lou Reed and Iggy Pop in the 1970s-1980s. Unsurprisingly, the film's visuals are loudly and colorfully queer, winning the costume designer Sandy Powell a BAFTA Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. The movie was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and won the award for the Best Artistic Contribution. It features later superstars Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Toni Collette and Eddie Izzard -- and tailor-made music by contemporary rock bands as well as two fictional bands made of members of Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Minutemen, etc.

Our usual curator and host Phil Guie-Ng will be away, so this is mostly a chance to kick back and watch a movie on our giant screen, while catching up with your HoS community.
