The Legacy of Disco

Disco was much more than simply a fun style of music; it was a unique and vibrant collaboration between Queer, Black, and Latino cultures. In the 1970s, facing rampant discrimination where public gatherings for Gay men were illegal, Disco musicians and dancers found crucial avenues for self-expression in underground events. This music was a powerful fuel for freedom. It steadily gained popularity and moved up to public discotheques. The original Studio 54 then became a global phenomenon—indisputably the best nightclub in history. With its pervasive sexiness and play-positive attitude, Studio 54 set the stage for today's community play party scene.

The Talent

DJ 80085

DJ 80085 curates titillating disco & diva house tunes for the gays, theys, & slays to make you stay perky. Host of Discotitz, a bi-weekly radio show streaming on community radio bff.fm, DJ 80085 explores disco sounds from across eras and cultures with an unserious princess persona. She grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, and got introduced to disco by her dad growing up. Now, disco is a way to reconnect to her upbringing, a testament to the vast reach of disco across borders paired with a rich history that stems from Black cultural resistance: Disco is a fuel for our collective liberation!

Boötes

Boötes spins deep, funky grooves from and for many decades, with an abiding and particular love for disco and mixing bright dance energy with heady textures. Beginning in the underground rave scene in the mid-90s, his music features regularly at many Bay Area community events, from boat parties to forest renegades, from warehouses and clubs to smaller themed parties, from sunrise to sunset and back again. And through it all, few things make him happier than a dance floor full of true disco enthusiasts.
