This workshop explores aesthetics, sensations, and technical considerations for torsion - twisting our partners with the weight of gravity and their own form to create new shapes and challenging sensations. hua hua will guide tying pairs through methods of creating and managing torsion, including strategies for balancing support and restriction in twisting ties, communication and body awareness for navigating the intensity of torsions, and the scene-building potential of rotation and off-axis forms

You Should Know:

  1. This class will be taught both on the floor and on bamboo hardpoints provided by the Studio.
  2. Students tying should be confident tying suspension-capable harnesses and managing uplines.
  3. Students being tied should be familiar with communicating during suspension and able to sustain partial and full weight-bearing ties.
  4. This class is designed for paired tying; self-suspension will not be covered.

ABOUT the instructor:

hua hua is a Shibari artist, teacher, and the founder of Borderline Shibari, a platform to share and nurture the "ambiguous culture" of shibari. She began her teaching, performing, and organizing work in Shanghai in 2027 before relocating to Europe, where she continues to teach, perform, and create across mediums.

hua hua's teaching style emphasizes intentionality, expression, and emotional process over a single tradition or style. She views rope as a bridge - between inner and outer, elevated and underground - and integrates influences from BDSM, physical theater, and intercultural collaboration into her work. hua hua’s work has been featured in places like Shibari Study, Queer Rope Festival, Espacio Nos and in collaborations with SIRLION and untitalb.
