Unbounded Shibari: A Rope Lab for Neurodivergent Connection

Workshop Overview

Unbounded Shibari: A Rope Lab for Neurodivergent Connection is a 3.5-hour, hands-on exploration of creative rope practice for people who learn, feel, and connect differently.

This workshop blends technical refinement, emotional awareness, and self-expression to help you build confidence, creativity, and deeper connection through rope.

This isn’t about memorizing patterns - it’s about learning to think with rope. You’ll refine your technique, experiment with tension and flow, and explore how rope can become a language for communication, embodiment, and play.

Each class focuses on one concept, knot, or creative application while providing structured space for individual workshopping and feedback. Bring an existing tie or project to refine, and get feedback on. Then explore the class concept through your own experience and a guided approach.

Learning Objectives

Adaptive Technique: Modify and personalize ties for different bodies, sensory needs, and abilities.

Creative Flow: Practice new knots, transitions, and movement techniques to expand your rope vocabulary.

Communication & Feedback: Build trust and awareness through guided exercises that strengthen connection.

Confidence in Rope: Develop intuitive control and responsiveness through feedback and guided practice.

Who Should Attend

Best for intermediate students or those with a solid grasp of rope fundamentals who want to grow creatively and technically.

You should be comfortable with rope handling, reverse tension, and a single column tie (Summerville Bowline or preferred method) and be actively tying a pattern or project you’d like to workshop.

Bringing a regular rope or switch partner is strongly encouraged. Solo attendees are welcome, but active tying is essential to benefit fully.

The class is for neurodiverse, disabled, and generally non-normative people. Non-binary, trans, gay, straight all are welcome and encouraged if they share a love for rope. Neurotypical participants are welcome but expected to adapt to the tone, pacing, and needs of a neurodivergent-centered space.

What to Bring

Bring your own ropes, hemp or jute preferred. Synthetic rope may be used at your own discretion.

For any full or dangerous partial suspensions, synthetic high-strength uplines are required for safety. If you don’t know if a suspension is dangerous. Don’t do it.

Wear comfortable, form-fitting, minimal clothing; underwear or equivalent coverage is required.

Bring water, snacks, medication, or any accessibility items you need for comfort and focus.

Assistants needed for access accommodations, who are not tying partners, may attend free of charge.

If you do not have a pattern you are workshopping. I suggest these free online learning resources suggested for review and prep:

Crash Restraint

The Duchy

Shibari Study

(These include both paid and free content - use discretion and trust your intuition when evaluating rope sources.)

About your Host:

Dr. Ben (he/him) - Founder of Unbounded Shibari, educator, and rope artist.

A professionally trained educator with nearly two decades of experience teaching diverse students, he is the creator of Radiant Weave Shibari — a fusion of traditional Japanese rope, decorative weaving, and suspension design.

While this series doesn’t teach the Radiant Weave method directly, elements may appear during workshop time as examples of adaptive and creative thinking in rope.

A self-taught rigger influenced by Setonix, Rory’s Brain Works, Shay Tizano, and Hajime Kinoko, among others, he has performed rope art publicly and at local events, including multiple years of street performances at Folsom Street Fair. He also mentors motivated private rope students.

As a multiply disabled, neurodiverse lifelong learner, his teaching combines curiosity, resilience, and care for inclusion. Classes center creative exploration, communication, and discovering individual style through rope.
