If you were to make a sign that reveals something about yourself you want to hide from the world and hold it in public, what would it say? That’s the question Vulnerable Rally asks of its participants. Vulnerable Rally takes us past the niceties and social graces to which we conform into the very heart of that which makes us human. Our fears, our shames, our prejudices—when these shadow parts of ourselves come to light, they not only have the chance to free us, they can also free those who pass us by and create powerful healing connections between people.
Vulnerable Rally is part of a global invitation to remember our common humanity in the most vulnerable way: part absurdist street theatre and part shadow work.
This is an experiment in radical belonging. You are invited to be brave and do your healing in public.
Here are some ideas for signs:
-I’ve lost my sense of purpose.
-I’m full of self-doubt.
-It’s easier for me to see the faults of others than to acknowledge my own shortcomings.
-I regret the way I’ve treated people I love.
-I’m afraid of growing old.
-I don’t like my sign. (you can be silly as well)
-I don’t have any idea what I am doing.
-I’m terrified of being judged.
-Sometimes I fear that I am not a good parent.
-I’m afraid of dying alone.
-I feel like I don’t belong.
Please join us from 5-7PM at the NE corner of 23rd and Telegraph in Oakland this Friday August 2. It will be Oakland’s famous First Friday event. We’ll likely be just off of Telegraph on 23rd. We will have markers and blank cardboard for you to make your own sign, or you can bring one pre-made.
Take public transportation or a bike. Parking will be scarce.
Afterwards we can decompress over a bite to eat or dance it out.

Are you a photographer, filmmaker, or journalist? There will be some beautiful photo ops and stories to capture. Come.
Love the idea but cannot make it this Friday in Oakland? Make a sign anyway, stand in the street, and upload a photo of yourself with #vulnerablerally.
