No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds

The limits of empathy.

This week, as I attempted to be a human in a world that was filled with pain and anger, I faced the realization that no one can understand what it’s like to walk in my shoes and vice versa.

As I went down the compassion vs. empathy rabbit hole, I read about the ways our ability to empathize is limited by our own unique experiences and learned how to better handle difficult conversations, communicate my needs, and understand my limits for understanding other people’s POV.

As it happens- this theme came up repeatedly throughout the recent weeks and is timed perfectly with our new NOTAFLOF program launch.

When inclusion efforts end with hurting others

Inclusion is one of Bloom’s Community Values. From our website: “Bloom invites everyone to express themselves, organize, connect, and celebrate. Bloom will not tolerate any sexism, racism, transphobia, fatphobia, or ableism. Creating an inclusive and welcoming space requires work from all of us, especially those who have benefited from unequal power dynamics and move through the world with more privilege.”

Recently, we received 2 reminders that our inclusion work at Bloom is not complete (and will never be).

First, a low-vision member reached out and shared their long and painful onboarding experience using a screen reader device. While we quickly addressed the issues this acted as a good reminder to actively hold other people’s experience when we build and test our app development.

Later, we learned that a past Bloom event was executed in a way that hurt and harmed attendees, mostly due to a lack of awareness and competency about the unique experience this community holds. We are in the process of repairing with the impacted people, but I want to personally apologize to anyone who was harmed due to this experience, and invite you to reach out and connect on the topic.

Our Commitment to building an inclusive Bloom

Our team– me (Noa), Jeremey, Tony, and Violet– is committed to continuing to build Bloom towards an inclusive platform. We will do this by inviting and listening to feedback, identifying obstacles, and defining strategies for creating an inclusive platform. We’ve already scheduled a DEI workshop for the end of the month with Rising Team.

NOTAFLOF

Although philanthropy is a radical idea in many corporate sectors it is a long-time practice in the counter-culture world. “Pay what you want” or “no one turned away for lack of funds” (NOTAFLOF) is a norm for most of the events posted on Bloom.

We decided to combine our communities’ NOTAFLOF mindset with a global corporate movement called “Pledge 1%”. Pledge 1% is an easy model with a proven track record of helping businesses of all sizes and stages have a positive impact on the world. Bloom is joining the 18,000 companies that pledge to donate 1% of their (profit / product / equity / staff time) for good.

Bloom’s 1% Pledge

Today, Bloom is proud to join the Pledge 1% community and continue to integrate giving back into our work, culture, and values. As part of our 1% pledge, we commit to donate 1% of our product to people who are unable to afford it. For Bloom, this means offering free and heavily discounted SuperBloomer Memberships.

How to NOTAFLOF

To reduce friction for people wanting to enjoy our NOTAFLOF, most members will be able to self-serve the benefit. Please visit https://bloomcommunity.com/notaflof for more information.

Member Spotlight

Securing Sexuality conference is happening this upcoming weekend in Detroit. I am so inspired by the work this team is doing on bringing together sex+ community leaders with tech and cyber security professionals. If you can't make it to Detroit, like me, I highly recommend checking out the orgs podcast.
