glossary of sex-positive terms
A bisexual person is an individual who is attracted to both men and women. Bisexuality is a sexual orientation that falls under the umbrella of LGBTQ+ identities, and bisexual individuals can be any gender.
Bisexuality is not exclusive to two genders. Some people may identify as pansexual, meaning they are attracted to all gender identities, or polysexual, meaning they are attracted to multiple gender identities but not all. Similarly, some people may identify as queer or fluid in terms of their sexuality and attraction to different genders.
It’s important to remember that sexuality exists on a spectrum and can change over time; this goes for anyone who might identify as bisexual. In other words, someone who identifies as bisexual today might not feel the same way tomorrow — or vice versa. It’s also possible for someone to be attracted to both sexes but only have relationships with one sex; this doesn’t mean they aren’t bisexual.
Bisexual individuals often face stigma due to a number of misconceptions about their identity — for example, that being bisexual means you want multiple partners at once or that it is just a “phase” that will pass in time. Both of these assumptions are false and should be taken seriously by those looking to understand what it means to be bisexual.
It's important for individuals and society alike to realize that everyone has their own unique journey when it comes to understanding their own sexuality and feelings towards others — so try not make assumptions about how someone else identifies based on your own limited knowledge. Everyone deserves respect no matter what their sexual orientation may be!
